Interview questions

Here are some examples of questions you might be asked at interview so it’s worth trying to anticipate how you would respond to them. It’s also useful to prepare a few specific supporting examples in case you are asked to back up your answers.

  • - Tell me about yourself
  • - Why do you want to leave your current employer?
  • - What do you want from your next role?
  • - Why do you want to work for this company?
  • - What attracts you to this position?
  • - What are your key strengths and weaknesses?
  • - What has been your greatest success in your current role?
  • - How would your colleagues describe you?
  • - What style of management brings out the best in you?
  • - How comfortable are you making business decisions and give an example of when you have had to do this or influence your client to make a business decision
  • - What motivates you?
  • - How do you cope under pressure?
  • - How do you handle criticism?
  • - Where do you see yourself in five years time?
  • - What are your career aspirations?
  • - What can you offer us that the next candidate can’t?

General tips:

  • - Try to stay on point and avoid giving rambling answers
  • - Don’t reply with just a ‘yes’ or ‘no
  • - Maintain eye contact with all of the interviewers, not just one
  • - Answer questions honestly, making sure you can back up any points you make
  • - Respect your interviewer, regardless of their position
  • - Know your CV inside out
  • - Never criticise your current employer or colleagues
  • - Show enthusiasm for the role and the company
  • - Use your judgement when asking questions about salary and promotional prospects. Clients may be concerned if you are more pre-occupied with where this role might lead than the role itself.

Remember, an interview is a two-way process so have some questions prepared for them too. Some examples are:

  • - How has this opportunity come about?
  • - How would you describe the company’s culture?
  • - What is the team structure?
  • - How do you appraise the performance of your staff?
  • - What support is there for employees seeking to develop their career and do you offer ongoing training?
  • - What challenges are likely to arise during the first six months (in the role)?
  • - What plans does the company have for growth / development in the next few years?
